The History of Lord Jagannātha’s

Snāna-Yātrā

Śrī Jagannātha Mahā-Bhāva-Prakāśa

An  evening lecture by His Divine Grace Śrīla Gour Govinda Swami Mahārāja,
given on the 23rd June 1994, in Towaco, USA. (Little or no editing done.)

I am very happy to come here and meet you all on this auspicious full moon day, Lord Jagannātha’s snāna-yātrā, bathing ceremony.

Jagannātha takes a public bath today. You might have seen in Jagannātha Purī, how Jagannātha, Baladeva and Subhadrā are sitting and taking a public bath on this day. Why does He take a public bath on this day? What is the occasion? Does anyone know?

Devotee: It is His appearance day.

Śrīla Gour Govinda Swami: Today is Jagannātha’s birthday. Jagannātha is Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa’s birthday is in the month of Bhādrava, that is aṣṭami, the eighth day of the dark fortnight, Kṛṣṇāṣṭami. Jagannātha is Kṛṣṇa so how it is Jagannātha’s birthday? That is another question.
