The Greed of the Lord

A lecture by Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami
Bhubaneswar, India, March 17, 1992  on
The Appearance Day of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu

This wonderful lecture was first published in the Back to Godhead Magazine # 27-02, 1993, and  is included in the book The Embankment of Separation published in 1996 by Gopal Jiu Publications.

Using the word `greed’ is very wonderful. Has anyone used this word, in this context, previously? No one has used it, but Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī did. Because of the development of this greed, Vrajarāja-nandana Kṛṣṇa became Śacīnandana Gaura Hari. Pūrṇa Brahma, the Complete Whole, who has no deficiency, who wants nothing, still develops greed. Wonderful! He is self-satisfied. He does not want anything, He lacks nothing. Then why has He such greed? You should understand its mystery, the tattva behind it. He who is paramānanda-maya, supremely blissful, and sac-cid-ānanda-maya, full of eternity, knowledge and bliss, He develops greed. But what type of greed, and for what? This is very wonderful.

On Gaura Purnima 2014 we read from Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat the description of the Lord’s transcendental appearance, then i shared what i could remember from this article The Greed of the Lord, then we read from The Last Limit of Bhakti book by Srila Gour Govinda Swami and heard about the two opposites in Brahman, in Lord Krishna, in Sriman Mahaprabhu. Very nice to hear from His Divine Grace Srila Gour Govinda Swami Srila Gurudevaji in an assembly of devotees. Hare Krishna.

    Hare Krishna Prabhuji,

    Jai Srila Gurudeva.
Yes we did distribute the Sri Guru Carana Padma booklet on the day of Srila Gurudeva’s disappearance festival and The Greed of Lord booklets, which I personally carried in my hands from BBSR, we distributed about 400 copies on the Gour Purnima day. Devotees were trying to fly for those copies.

Hare Krishna. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. Thank you so much for presenting Srila Gour Govinda Swami’s beautiful lecture and the attractive booklet which accompanies it. I tried to follow the lecture while reading the book and found it disturbing that changes to his divine words had been made. I really cannot see the need for that. “As It Is”, is just perfect. From what i read, the changes are not significant but still it is significant that there are unnecessary changes. i really love every word he says in the order he says them, surely others do too. I had difficulty in doing two things: copy and paste from the booklet and minimizing the book so i could go to the audio when i needed to pause it for some reason. Can you please tell me if it is possible to copy and paste, and how to do it as well as how to reduce the copy so i can leave the page? I could only close it, which meant i had to start the booklet over again each time. Thank you for the effective pause button on the audio. Again, thank you, prabhu. This is wonderful service. All glories to Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s Holy Appearance Day. Hare Krishna.

To make the English flow nicely for when devotees read this lecture, it sometimes needs little editing.
