Recalling his childhood Śrī Śrīmad Gour Govinda Swami said:
“…The first thing I could remember as a child were the songs of Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura sung by my uncles from Gadāi-Giri. My uncles knew kīrtana; they were great kīrtanīyas…”

“…I can remember from when I was very young that my grandfather, my father and all my uncles had a śikhā, would put on Vaiṣṇava tilak after bathing and wore kaṇṭhi-mālā. They were all Vaiṣṇavas and they were always chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa…”
